Foreign Language Month at PMHS

The LOTE Department has been busy preparing activities for celebrating Foreign Language Month. The French classes started with Mardi Gras in February. Students entered homemade cakes in the Mardi Gras Cake Decorating Contest. French classes had the responsibility of eating and judging the cakes. Cakes in the categories of best theme, best looking, most original, and best tasting competed.

Debbie Griffin organized the LOTE/ESL Cultural Presentation on March 16 in the auditorium. Language classes enjoyed a World Tour slide show by Stephanie Vogel testing their knowledge and appealing to their love of music. The Italian students prepared a virtual tour of Italy‘s, major cities. The French Honor Society presented a French art and architecture slide show. Pat Danvers entertained the audience with his guitar and French songs. Adriana Devers and Gloria Romero worked with the Latin Dance Team to perform a Dominican dance. It was a day everyone enjoyed.

Cristin Weeks helped to organize the Door Decorating Contest. Students decorated classroom doors to represent countries around the world. They worked hard to display cultural and historical information, maps, and pictures. These students did a great job of bringing world culture to the building.

Several classes also held a food day so students could sample recipes from around the world. Many students and parents did a great job preparing this feast.

Next, the French classes are off to New York City to see The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. They will also enjoy lunch at La Bonne Soupe.

Finally, the LOTE Honor Societies Induction is Thursday March 29. This is to honor the students who have achieved academic success in their studies of French, Italian and Spanish.

Foreign Language Month has been a great success because of the creativity and diligence of the teachers and students working to appreciate and understand diverse cultures.
